Hengyi Industries Contributes to Increasing Brunei’s Carbon Sink with 5 th Reforestation Project

Berakas Forest Reserve, 1st April 2020 – Hengyi Industries Sdn Bhd (Hengyi) organised its 5th Reforestation Project at Berakas Forest Reserve Recreational Park as part of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to protect and preserve Brunei Darussalam’s biodiversity and natural environment as well as to support Brunei National Climate Change Policy’s (BNCCP) Strategy 2 on Forest Cover, which aims to increase the natural carbon sink through afforestation and reforestation with the target of planting 500,000 new trees by 2035.

More than 65 volunteers and staffs participated in the tree planting event which includes Hengyi’s staff and management, representatives from the Brunei Climate Change Secretariat (BCCS), The Forestry Department, and Green Brunei.

510 tree saplings were successfully planted across 0.5 hectares of land during the project. Five (5) species of trees, which comprised of Sepetir, Ru Runang, Selungsur, Resak, and Tulong were chosen to be planted as the tree species are more likely to survive in the sandy soil condition and the dry environment of Berakas Forest Reserve.

Berakas Forest Reserve is chosen as the location for the reforestation project as it has been identified as a degraded area due to forest fires which severely affected the trees in the forest reserve. The location was also chosen as part of BNCCP’s focus to rehabilitate the degraded areas through reforestation and afforestation.

The reforestation project was launched by Hengyi in May 2019 and to date, a total of 3010 tree saplings had been planted across 3 hectares of land. Steps are taken by Hengyi to make sure the planted tree saplings are able to grow steadily over the years. Hengyi also launched the reforestation project with an uncompromising pledge to plant trees covering a total land area of two hundred (200) hectares in support of Brunei Darussalam's commitments under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) through the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation Programme (REDD+)
