University Brunei Darussalam, Zhejiang University and Hengyi Industries, established a joint Process & Chemical Engineering Scholarship Programme aimed at nurturing Brunei petrochemical engineering talents under an international cooperation project. Hengyi Group of companies had previously set up the “Hengyi Petrochemical talent class” at the University Brunei Darussalam, and established the “Zhejiang University Hengyi International Exchange Fund” with the aim of sponsoring students to undertake the later part of their academic studies and industrial training at Zhejiang University. The preliminary foundation course was carried out at University Brunei Darussalam and upon completion of the entire course, students will be awarded a Bachelor’s Degree from University Brunei Darussalam and Zhejiang University.

In February 2014 the first 13 students from Brunei enrolled in the scholarship programme and had since attended the Joint Chemical and Process Engineering studies at Zhejiang University. Some of the subject modules included Chemical Theory and Practical with intensive Chinese language studies. Zhejiang University’s internationally-educated lecturers were specially selected to deliver the programme, which included personal supervision, classroom lecturing and an intricate evaluation system to ensure quality delivery. According to Professor Meng Qin from the Institute of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering at Zhejiang University, the students excelled in their studies and achieve scores well above average for the course.

During their stay in China, the students underwent a six months intership programme at Hengyi’s Caprolactam Baling Co. Mill and CNOOC Petrochemical Company in Zhoushan, China.

"It was an eye opener when we first arrived at Zhejiang University. Despite being away from home, Hengyi Group employees and University lecturers were excellent. They provided tremendous support and encouragement. We were like a family. The knowledge gained throughout the eighteen months was definitely well worth the initial anxiety especially it was my first time being away from home" said Fifi, a student from Brunei

Hengyi’s 2nd batch of 15 students left for Zhejiang University in March 2015. Zhejiang University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering will continue to upgrade and optimise the programme, taking into account, future career requirements of the Brunei students. The faculty will also organize a series of lectures and site visits, exposing the student to contemporary Chinese political, economic and cultural life. "Next, we will further enhance the level of training, advancing selected students to a Master's Degree or PhD level" Said The President of the Zhejiang University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Bioengineering Ren Qi Long.  He hoped that through such cooperations, they can develop more “ambassadors” for China to act as envoys of friendship in enhancing further economic and cultural cooperation between the two countries.
